Iowa's Fifth Bank Failure of 2023: Citizens Bank Shuts Down

Two Branches Reopen, Depositors Protected

Iowa Division of Banking Closes Citizens Bank

In a concerning trend for the banking industry, Citizens Bank, a financial institution based in Sac City, Iowa, has become the fifth bank to fail in the United States in 2023. On November 3rd, the Iowa Division of Banking (IDOB) made the announcement, citing financial instability as the reason for the closure.

The failure of Citizens Bank marks a significant event, as it is the first bank closure in Iowa since 2011. The IDOB has appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver, ensuring that depositors' funds are protected up to the FDIC's insurance limits.

While the situation is concerning, there is a glimmer of hope. Two branches of Citizens Bank will reopen under the ownership of State Bank of Fonda. This will provide some continuity for customers and help ensure that essential banking services remain available in the communities previously served by Citizens Bank.
